HESLO – Helicopter External Sling Load Operation
We are delighted to share information with you about a groundbreaking operation conducted by HeliService.
We recently made history by successfully delivering an approximately 750 kg external load to an offshore wind turbine in the GodeWind 1 wind farm.
This achievement not only demanded the utmost precision but was also the result of meticulous planning and prior training.
The Helicopter External Sling Load Operation (HESLO) was carried out by one of our AW169 helicopters, registration D-HHTJ. Pilots Manuel Mai and Ilie Lopez, supported by Task Specialist Michel Diniz, showcased their skills by safely placing the external load onto the hoist access platform of an offshore wind turbine located approximately 22 nautical miles (40 km) away from the pickup point directly at Orsted’s operating base.

The complex preparations included, among other things, obtaining the necessary approvals for an external landing at Orsted’s facility and the closure of potentially overflown roads. Accurate fuel and performance calculations were essential, as well as a maximum level of precision while flying and placing the load.
A noteworthy aspect was that, due to intensive training and testing of procedures during the preparatory phase under realistic conditions, the actual operation posed no special challenges, thanks to the excellent support from Orsted. Weather conditions on the day of the operation were optimal, with clear visibility, minimal cloud cover, and a wind speed of 15 knots.

The AW169 helicopters operated by HeliService are capable of transporting loads of up to 1 ton under realistic conditions. The load hook is approved for loads up to 1.5 tons, although this is generally impractical due to fuel restrictions. The maximum cruise speed with an external load is an impressive 100 KIAS (approximately 185 km/h).
For HESLO flights to offshore wind turbines, HeliService employs a three-person crew, consisting of a pilot, copilot, and an HESLO Task Specialist in the cabin.
This was a true milestone, and we look forward to receiving more HESLO inquiries in the future.
